Erik started his career in martial arts starting with judo in 1974. When a bully blocked a hip throw by pulling his hair, Erik decided to learn the striking arts. He then studied taekwondo, boxing and karate among other arts.  Erik left Minnesota for the sunny shores of Southern California in 1986 and began training under none other than the incomparable Guro Dan Inosanto.  Under Guro Dan Inosanto’s tutelage, Erik learned Jeet Kune Do, arnis/kali/eskrima, wing chun and silat.

Erik did finally return to grappling and studied Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Rorion, Royce and Rickson Gracie in his garage.  Upon returning to Guro Dan Inosanto’s academy, he met Yorinaga Nakamura, who taught him shoot wrestling. Erik got hooked on this style and, and through Nakamura, Erik connected with Satoru Sayama to train, learn and fight in the competitive world of shoot wrestling.

Erik also appeared in numerous movies including American Ninja 5Bloodsport 3The RiotFist of the North Star and Battledome. “The movie industry is brutal” says Erik “and makes … fighting seem like an afternoon at the beach”.  Easily recognized for his long, flowing golden hair (which he could not cut due to his movie career), Erik still won fights where his opponents, quite literally, dragged him around the cage by his golden locks.  In fact, OCKMMA’s very own President & CEO Robert A. Freeman, Esq. worked with Erik as a bouncer in Manhattan Beach).

Erik is the founder of Combat Submission Wrestling, and STX Kickboxing. He has trained fighters such as Josh Barnett, Ken Shamrock, Renato Sobral, Cub Swanson, and James Wilks. He is closely affiliated with Sean Sherk and Brock Lesnar. Erik was also the striking coach for Team Lesnar on The Ultimate Fighter: Season 13, and he is the co-author of the History of American Submission Wrestling.
