Bruce Lee was born on this day, November 27, 1940. Had he not died so tragically of a cerebral edema, he would have turned 76 today!

He was born in Chinatown, San Francisco. According to the Chinese Calendar, he was born in both the hour and the year of the Dragon.  His father, Lee Hoi-Chuen was a Hong Kong Cantonese opera star and famous actor. Bruce’s mother, Grace Ho, was of Eurasian descent – half German and Catholic. She was the adopted daughter of Ho Kom-Tong and the niece of Sir Robert Ho-Tung – both wealthy, influential, Hong Kong businessmen and philanthropists.

Bruce was the fourth of five children. Due to his mother’s family, he grew up in a privileged childhood. He began training in the Wing Chun style of martial arts with Grandmaster Yip Man.

He was also prone to fighting and, eventually, his parents sent him back to the United States to stay with his older sister, Agnes – and the rest, as they say, is history!

OCKMMA is proud to be part of Bruce Lee’s enduring history. We have several instructors who are certified under Bruce’s partner and best friend, Guro Dan Inosanto. In fact, OCKMMA’s Founder and Head Instructor, Ajarn Daniel Sullivan, is a Full Instructor under Guro Dan (Ajarn Daniel also dated Guro Dan’s daughter … but that’s a story for another post).

Bruce has passed on – but his legacy lives on!
