Everyone who grew up in the ’70’s and ’80’s knows this phrase “Yo Rocky!” – the underdog fighter who hailed from the City of Brotherly Love (Philadelphia or just plain “Philly”)!

And you also know this now iconic statue of Rocky “The Italian Stallion” Balboa – contender for the Heavyweight Championship of the World! (He finally does become the Champion – when he beats Apollo Creed in Rocky 2 – but that’s a story for another post).

In 1980, Sylvester Stallone himself contacted A. Thomas Schoenberg and commissioned this Statue for the movie “ROCKY III”.

And you’ll also remember these iconic Steps – where Rocky Balboa performs his victory dance when his training pays off and he easily makes the run to the heroic tune “Gonna Fly Now” by Bill Conti, Caroll Connors and Ayn Robbins.

Recently, OCKMMA’s very own Kevin Studley (yes folks … that is his REAL name) visited this iconic sites – and what better way to pay homage to the legendary, albeit fictitious, Italian Stallion – than by sporting his OCKMMA colors and gear?

“I’ve  been training at OCKMMA for 1 ½ years and man has the time flown by! OCKMMA has some of the best coaches I have ever met, and it is difficult to say which one of the many ‘awe-inspiring’ coaches are my favorite” says Studley (yes that really is his real name). “Each of them has such a unique skill set and personality, but common to all of them is their love and passion for martial arts”.

“We are lucky to have our head instructor Ajarn Dan teach the weekday classes, but while he is traveling the globe in search of additional knowledge to share with us; we have the amazing Kru Roman, Kru Nate, Kru Dennis, Kru Mike, and every so often we are blessed with Kru Janice as instructor” he says. “All of them are masters in the art of encouragement and coaching and have a different perspective on how to apply what we are learning. All though I cant say any one of the coaches is better than the next, the Kru that has been my greatest influence is hands down Kru Roman. He is an extremely talented person with the most positive coaching I have ever seen. He has a special gift that makes him amazing at anything he puts his mind too and I am glad to have him as my coach”.

Kevin sums it all up with words he live by … “Be GREAT!
